Founded in 1889 by Charles Bergstresser, Charles Dow and Edward Jones, the Wall Street Journal is printed six days a week. It was acquired by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation in 2007 after 105 years under the Bancroft family’s ownership. The Journal covers the latest in US, political and world news, connecting them to business fluctuations and market changes. The newspaper has won 39 Pulitzer Prizes.

Print-Wall Street Journal

For over a century, the Wall Street Journal has been one of America’s most influential newspapers, specializing in business and finance. The Library offers a variety of print and online subscriptions to the newspaper of record, including full-text access to the current issue as well as archival copies dating back to 1984 through ProQuest Historical Newspapers.

The Journal is known for its investigative journalism and has won 38 Pulitzer Prizes. In addition to the news, the paper covers politics and world events and is a source for expert commentary on economics, health, culture, technology, education, crime and government policy. Many of the Journal’s writers have also published books that expand on their coverage.

The WSJ is famous for its use of ink dot drawings (hedcuts) to illustrate stories, as well as photographs. It was also an early adopter of color, which first appeared in the newspaper on July 8, 1889. In recent years, the WSJ has increased its focus on lifestyle articles, including Off Duty (published Saturdays), Review (weekend edition) and Mansion (focused on high-end real estate). The WSJ was at the forefront of the 2008 financial crisis, publishing the story before most other newspapers had even considered it.

Online

The WSJ offers unrivalled journalism in print and online, winning 38 Pulitzer Prizes. Its staff journalists lead the way in coverage of U.S and world news, politics, business, arts and culture, and lifestyle. The newspaper also features breaking news streams, interactives and video.

In addition, readers can access the Europe and Asia editions with a single tap.

WSJ provides in-depth and first-rate coverage of finance, national and international news. Founded in 1889 by Charles Dow, Edward Jones and Charles Bergstresser, The Wall Street Journal has dominated American business publishing since its founding. It has won numerous Pulitzer Prizes. Currently, it is owned by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation and is published Monday through Friday. Its main section includes full tables of stock market activity, thorough reports on current business issues and in-depth articles. The newspaper also includes a large opinion and editorial page as well as reader letters and reviews of the arts. It has expanded its coverage to include international and Asian editions.

Social Media

The Journal is a major player on social media, with millions of followers across Twitter and Facebook. The WSJ’s editorial team also takes advantage of the platforms to broadcast their news and opinions. This is especially true for breaking news stories. The WSJ was first to report the death of Phillip Seymour, and in doing so used their Twitter account to answer questions from the public.

While the WSJ has a long tradition of reporting financial and stock market data, it has also become known for its investigative journalism, ranging from corporate corruption to alleged sexual harassment in the workplace. Its investigations have resulted in several criminal convictions, fines, and jail time for individuals and corporations.

In recent years, the WSJ has faced challenges to its reputation as a trusted source of news and information. In particular, the newspaper was criticised for its use of an Executive Learning Partnership content feed labelled as news articles but which essentially functioned as paid advertising. The company was accused of prioritising profits over ethical concerns following this revelation by whistleblower Frances Haugen.

Since editor-in-chief Emma Tucker took the reins of the Journal, she has been reducing staff numbers and introducing changes to its newsroom structure. She has also launched a new YouTube channel aimed at reaching younger audiences. The AllSides bias rating for this publication is Center.
