The Boston Globe was started by six Boston businessmen, including Eben Jordan (founder of retail store Jordan Marsh – now Macy’s). The first issue hit the presses on March 4, 1872 and cost four cents. In 1877, the Boston Globe paper began Sunday publication and a decade later added an afternoon edition. Members of the Taylor family served as publisher until 1999.

Founded in 1872- Boston Globe

The original building of the Boston Globe was on what was then known as Newspaper Row, in an area between Milk Street and Old City Hall. Its location was ideal — it was near the Boston Stock Exchange, major department stores (big advertisers), the Theatre District, and the State House and Old City Hall. In addition, the building was easy to get to by railroad and waterway.

The Boston Globe’s first issue appeared on March 4, 1872, costing four cents. But it hardly made a dent in the city’s 10 other newspapers, which were losing money. A recession, the Great Fire, and a financial panic followed soon after. Within a year the Boston Globe was close to bankruptcy. The six original investors hired Charles Taylor to turn things around. A former army officer, printer, and journalist, Taylor brought energy and imagination to the paper. He recognized the need to appeal to the changing tastes and interests of the urban population. He increased circulation by lowering the price, adding illustrations, and introducing family pages. He also supported progressive issues like women’s suffrage and shorter hours for factory workers.

The Globe remained in the hands of the Taylor family for over 100 years. In 1912 Columbia University established the first graduate program in journalism, endowed by a gift from the Globe’s founders. The New York Times Company acquired the paper in 2013 for $70 million. Today the Globe is owned by John W. Henry, the local billionaire and principal owner of the Boston Red Sox.

Pulitzer Prize Winners

A team of Globe reporters won the 2021 Pulitzer Prize for public service for a series that exposed deadly flaws in state motor vehicle agencies that allowed dangerous truck drivers to continue driving. The work uncovered repeated regulatory failures that led to deadly crashes and demanded immediate reforms.

The staff won a second Pulitzer in the editorial writing category for its comprehensive coverage of sexual abuse by Catholic priests, an effort that pierced secrecy and triggered local, national and international reaction that produced changes within the church. The Globe also won a Pulitzer for photography and a finalist citation in the feature writing category.

Two dozen Globe staffers were in the newsroom when the winners were announced, including editor-at-large Mark Feeney and managing editor Camilo Fonseca. The awards, the highest in journalism, recognize exemplary work in seven categories: criticism, breaking news, international reporting, explanatory reporting, feature writing and photography.

The Pulitzer Board’s award citation read, “Exhaustive and empathetic coverage of the Boston Marathon bombings and ensuing manhunt used a wide range of tools to show how deeply rooted the tragedy was in a community divided by race.” The winning photos captured both the strength of survivors and the relentless pursuit of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. Photographer Annie Rinaldi won a third Pulitzer, this time in the Feature Photography category, for her portraits of Strider Wolf, a kindergartner living in poverty and scarred by past abuse.

Location

Located in downtown Boston, less than a quarter mile from its historic home on “Newspaper Row” and close to the heart of city business and political life. The Globe has been recognized as a leading source for news and comment on music, politics, medicine, and the arts. In addition to its daily print newspaper, the company publishes a number of online and video platforms.

The Boston Globe has a long history of supporting local sports and community events. It also has a strong liberal editorial stance and frequently endorses Democratic candidates for public office. In the 21st century, the paper has emphasized national and international news coverage, while still stressing its local roots.

After 58 years wedged between Morrissey Boulevard and the Southeast Expressway, the paper moved back to downtown Boston in 2017. The new headquarters is less than a block from the old one, near City Hall and the State House and numerous corporate offices.

The Globe has a large and diverse staff that works across all platforms to bring news, information, and entertainment to the people of Massachusetts and beyond. It is a 27-time Pulitzer Prize winning news organization that has consistently been rated among the top papers in the United States. The Globe is also a leader in digital innovation, including the launch of BostonGlobe Today, a weekday TV show on NESN.
